The Corinthians wanted to hear preaching that was philosophically complex and rhetorically beautiful. When Paul came to Corinth he refused to present the Gospel in that way. Why? Shouldn't we try to make the Gospel as attractive as possible to the lost so that they might believe? This text tells us the answer is no, because God has rejected and condemned the values, attitudes, and methods of the world.

We finally see God's future grace in promising to sustain believers in the faith to the end.

We begin a two part study of the introductory verses to 1 Corinthians. Specifically in this sermon, we focus on Paul's usage of the idea of "calling" in the introductory verses. We see God's call for the church in the life of Paul, we see God's call on the church of holiness and participation in Christ, and we see that believers are those who call upon the name of the Lord. We also see why Paul emphasized these points in the Corinthian context.

In this sermon we look at the foundation of the Corinthian Church by the Apostle Paul and his ministry co-workers. In so doing, we see that God is absolutely sovereign over the local church, specifically its construction (its placement, its founding ministry partnerships, and the circumstances of its creation), its composition, its conservation, and its continuation.
